An irradiance sensor is a meteorological and industrial device that measures the amount of solar radiation reaching the surface of a photovoltaic (PV) panel. The measured parameter is typically expressed in W/m² (watts per square meter), representing the amount of energy per unit area.

These sensors are widely used in solar power plants (PV plants), meteorological stations, environmental monitoring systems, and smart agriculture applications.

With the collected data, solar energy production performance can be analyzed, atmospheric radiation levels can be monitored, and environmental data models can be developed.

In solar power plants, irradiance sensors measure the actual solar energy reaching the panels.

As a result:

  • Panel performance is analyzed.
  • Energy production efficiency is calculated.
  • System faults are detected early.
  • Power plant performance reports are generated.
The system performance ratio (PR) can be calculated by comparing the radiation value measured by the sensor with the electrical energy produced by the power plant.
